Everton’s final game of the season, a trip to title contenders Arsenal, ends in defeat after an extremely controversial handball towards the conclusion of the game to give the Gunners a 2-1 win over the Blues.
However, for Arsenal, even a win over the Toffees wasn’t enough, as the other team in the title race, Manchester City, was able to grab a 3-1 win over West Ham to make them champions of the league for four seasons in a row!
The game began, and Arsenal were clearly on top of the Blues, as this game was of more importance for the London side. However, at the half-hour mark, Dominic Calvert-Lewis gave the Blues a slimmer of hope after striking the post, perhaps knocking the confidence of the Arsenal side.

During this positive stage of the game, Everton managed to take the lead! A massive deflection off Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye’s free kick sent Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya stunned as it spun into the back of the net, making it 1-0!

However, Arsenal were able to cancel out the advantage pretty much immediately. 3 minutes after Everton’s goal, the ball fell to an unmarked Takehiro Tomiyasu on the edge of the box, and he managed to slot it into the back of the net, making the game level.
As the game eased on, it was heading towards the conclusion of the match and the season as well, with Arsenal expected to finish second in the table. Even though this was the case, it seemed they didn’t want to end the season on a low note.
After Emile Smith-Rowe’s shot hit the bar in the 83rd minute, Everton weren’t able to resolve the situation, and Ashley Young’s poor pass fell to Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus, and it ended up with Kai Havertz, who was able to get the goal they needed to put the issue beyond all doubts.
A VAR decision was needed, however, due to a claim for a handball on Jesus. For some, it seemed he controlled the ball with his arm, allowing him to set himself up to carry on the counterattack. In the end, VAR gave the Gunners the goal, giving them all three points. However, Manchester City’s 3x repeated Premier League champion status turned into 4. It was party time at the Etihad Stadium and sorrow and despair at the Emirates.
