Everton have completed the signing of Chelsea youngster Tyrique George on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign, but what impact is expected from the winger?
The 2006-born player joined Chelsea’s academy at age eight. Growing up in Camden, London, George seemed to impress scouts at the development programmes, as the rest of his career, up until now, has been spent at Cobham Training Ground.
Following the winger’s hard work and commitment in the academy setup, the opportunity was granted for a professional contract for George in June 2024, where a three-year deal was laid out on the table (with the option for a further year), which was signed.
The first senior appearance for George came not long after the contract deal, as, in August 2024, the 19-year-old came off the bench for Chelsea in a UEFA Conference League match, at home, against Servette. With the help of an Nkunku penalty, Enzo Maresca earned his first win as Chelsea manager, with the academy graduate playing for around 30 minutes.
Since the first team appearance, George has played 36 more times for Chelsea, registering 6 goals and 6 assists. Due to the extreme levels of competition surrounding the squad, specifically within the attacking areas – Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and Garnacho, to name a few – it was only a matter of time for the youngster to gain valuable experience elsewhere, and now the chance has arrived.
There were certainly things going on behind the scenes at Finch Farm across the January transfer window, with initial talks emerging with Youssef En-Nesyri not materialising, with the Moroccan striker now set to move to Al-Ittihad, but it was the final couple of weeks of the window that became engaging…
Everton loanee Jack Grealish suffered a stress fracture in his foot following Everton’s win at Villa Park on the 18th of January, meaning that it would be likely for Moyes to bring in another attacking asset. The interest in Tyrique George occurred on deadline day, with Evertonians making the assumption that the Chelsea man would serve as a direct replacement. This was the case until news broke of a possible outflow.
When breaking news hit that Crystal Palace were in advanced talks for Dwight McNeil, the process aligned nicely. The expectation for McNeil, who has been sitting on the bench for the majority of the season, was to leave the club for a decent fee, £20m. Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, the transfer collapsed at the final hurdle, and both McNeil and his partner took to Instagram.
“Tonight, and the last 48 hours, have broken my heart to see how the football world you love so much can be so cruel to you. To have something promised to you, to have been dragged along on an emotional rollercoaster and to be toyed with until the final minute, to have 4 and a half years of your life promised to you, travelling, medicals, arrangements made, promises made, to have prepared to move your life, our life, 100s of miles away in the space of a few hours. For that to be torn away from you at the last second with absolutely no explanation, going from everything to radio silence, no phone call, no communication, and be left brokenhearted with nothing but confusion, has hurt more than I can say.” - Megan Sharpley via Instagram
Though the winger didn’t get the move promised, Everton made a statement on socials explaining that everyone was behind McNeil, despite the situation, which is exactly what should occur.
Now Everton will have more options to implement, as we are well into the second half of the season now, but George is now expected to start ahead of McNeil.
When asked in the unveiling interview what is expected from you, George stated, “I feel ready, ready to make an impact. It feels like an exciting time for the club; I’m going to attack this new challenge. I want to hit the ground running as quickly as possible, and hopefully I can do that.
Tyrique George is eligible to make his Everton debut on Saturday as the Blues face Fulham at Craven Cottage, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if we see a cameo from the new signing!
