The Blues hit the bar, hit the post, almost caused a red card for the Saints, and finally had an equaliser disallowed by VAR, with the majority of these moments being caused by Beto, who was the hero last week in a 1-1 draw against Fulham and nearly was again.
Beto Everton Stats:
Appearances: 45
Goals: 7
Assists: 2
Yellow Cards: 2
Red Cards: 0
Most people would agree that the first half was extremely dull. There were not a lot of chances being created, presumably out of fear, as Everton’s away record and Southampton’s form this season have both been shocking.
However, the second half was more exciting, especially towards the conclusion of the game.
When Beto smashed the ball of the crossbar with his head, unexpectedly Southampton were then on the counterattack. 25 seconds later and an Adam Armstrong strike after Yukinari Sugawara’s cutback went into the back of the net, giving Russell Martin’s side the lead.
Adam Armstrong Southampton Stats:
Appearances: 128
Goals: 31
Assists: 16
Yellow Cards: 4
4 minutes later, in the 89th minute, Everton thought they had equalised through Beto. However, a lengthy VAR decision had concluded that the substitute was offside, and the referee Andy Madley soon enough blew the full-time whistle, concluding the game.
Everton’s five-game unbeaten run has now come to an end.
