After a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to bottom of the league Southampton, Everton are looking to “reflect and go again” (Orel Mangala) against West Ham at the London Stadium.
Last weekend, when Beto smashed the ball of the crossbar with his head, Southampton were then on the counterattack. 25 seconds later and an Adam Armstrong strike after Yukinari Sugawara’s cutback went into the back of the net, giving Russell Martin’s side the victory over the Blues.
Completely shocked, some Evertonians seem to have turned against the team, especially the manager Sean Dyche, evident through multiple comments from various social media outlets.
However, there is a fresh opportunity for Dyche to prove his worth as Everton manager; it’s now a waiting game for whether he takes it or not.
Sean Dyche Everton Stats:
Matches: 75
Won: 25
Draws: 19
Losses: 31
On the subject of managers, according to The Athletic, failure to produce a convincing performance in this fixture could be the final straw for West Ham gaffer Julen Lopetegui. Another top side that has ultimately been underperforming this season, as only a year ago the Hammers were European Conference League champions; now they sit 14th in the Premier League table.
Julen Lopetegui West Ham Stats:
Matches: 12
Won: 4
Drawn: 2
Losses: 6
After the Southampton defeat, a standout player was Denmark’s Jesper Lindstrøm, who struggled to find form towards the start of the season, but in his third Premier League start away at St Mary’s Stadium, the winger managed to deliver nine crosses into the box, number one for the game, won seven duels, and created two big chances.
The 24-year-old spoke in an extended interview after the defeat:
“We want to win games, we want to win points, we want to win games like this, it’s not good enough.”
“Overall, we have to demand more of each other. We have to train hard; we have to keep going."
Jesper Lindstrøm Everton Stats:
Appearances: 8
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Yellow Cards: 1
Red Cards: 0
Some more positive news within Everton this week: new loanee Armando Broja is stepping up his recovery and is now back on the grass. The Albanian suffered an Achilles injury a while back and is now almost there to fully recover from his long-term injury.
The introduction of a new striker into the first team squad would be able to take the work load off two strikers, Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which was already a struggle as Portuguese striker Youseff Chermiti is also currently out with a foot injury, a young prolific striker who was showing positive early signs in his career.
