Everton Battered In The Capital

A second unacceptable performance this season by Everton allowed Tottenham to exploit the defence on multiple occasions, resulting in a 4-0 defeat.

A restricted Everton side due to multiple injuries meant the majority of Evertonians were left with only a slither of confidence going into this game, and this was Spurs’ result last week. A Jamie Vardy equaliser meant the points were shared last week in Leicester. The large number of absentees the Toffees had for this fixture played a huge role today.

Everton Current Injury List:

Youseff Chermiti - Foot Injury

Nathan Patterson - Thigh Injury

Jarrad Branthwaite - Groin/ Hip Injury

James Garner - Lower Leg Injury

Seamus Coleman - Lower Leg Injury

Due to this, some changes to the matchday squad were necessary for Sean Dyche’s side. As well, Tottenham’s new signing, Dominic Solanke, was forced to miss the match due to picking up a slight knock.

It only took Spurs 14 minutes to go ahead, when Swedish midfielder Kulusevski picked up the ball on the right-hand side. He was able to carry it into the Everton penalty area before laying it off to Bissouma, who was completely unmarked outside the box, and a sweet strike that hit the underside of the crossbar was able to find its way past Jordan Pickford.

Eleven minutes after Bissouma’s goal, Heung Min Son had his first of the game. When James Tarkoswki comfortably had possession of the ball, with Son lingering around the final third, a perfect pass back to Pickford in the penalty area was successful. Unfortunately for the England goalkeeper, a heavy touch would result in a foot race between him and the South Korean, with the Tottenham man coming out on top. With an empty net, the only job Son had was to slot it home, which he did, making it 2-0 at halftime.

A lacklustre performance by Everton collectively was the major reason for the defeat today. However, a possible excuse could be made for debutant Roman Dixon. The fullback, who had been brought up through the academy, recently playing in a 3-1 win for the under-21s against local side Tranmere Rovers in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, was brought straight into the starting XI today. It seemed Andre Postecoglu had instructed his side to focus on the youngster’s side when attacking, as it would be unlikely for him to be up to the standards of Spurs’ attack just yet. Although Dixon was arguably one of Everton’s best players, he was exploited a few times.

In the 57th minute, Sean Dyche decided it was time to bring on some of the new signings to see if they could reduce the deficit. Bringing off Jack Harrison and Abdoulaye Doucoure and replacing them with ex-Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrøm and ex-Marseille central attacking midfielder Iliman Ndiaye. This instantly made a difference, as the first and only shot on target for the Toffees occurred moments after by Lindstrøm. The ex-Everton man, Richarlison, was also introduced for Spurs, rubbing even more salt into the wounds!

2 goals in 6 minutes would make it game, set, and match, as Cristian Romero scored and Heung min Son too, making it a brace for him. Another Everton academy prospect, Harrison Armstrong, was introduced late into the game, replacing veteran Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye.
