Calvert-Lewin’s Fluke Goal Claims Three Points For The Blues

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's deflection off Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric's clearance at the end of the first half was the only goal in Everton's 1-0 victory over the Clarets at Goodison Park!

Today, I was lucky enough to sit in the Director's Box at Goodison, where I saw legends such as Neville Southall and Peter Reid, as well as current player Lewis Dobbin.

Here was my view in the Director's Box of the game today!

It was a very stop-and-start game today, with both teams losing possession frequently. In Everton's case, the long ball tactic was the reason for this. Sometimes it is frustrating to watch, but gambling for the ball can pay off sometimes, which is obviously what Sean Dyche truly believes in, as he set up the Toffees in this way from the kickoff.

Also, the large amounts of offside, 11 in total — 10 for Everton and 1 for Burnley — caused the game to come to a halt. It is clear due to the match stats, with most of the stats in favour of Burnley.

Match Stats:

Everton - Burnley

Possession: 37% - 63%

Shots on Target: 12 - 6

Corners: 3 - 5

Offsides: 10 - 1

From watching Burnley this season, it is clear manager Vincent Kompany is very keen on playing out from the back, which is what ultimately caused Everton's goal.

The last touch of the first half was in the 45+2 minute, where it was passed back to the Burnley goalkeeper, and whilst attempting to clear the ball off the pitch, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin blocked the ball and bounced up in the air and eventually into the empty net. Everton were leading the game going into the second half, with a huge morale boost.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin Stats This Season:

Goals: 5

Shots: 60

Shots On Target: 23

Penalties Scored: 1

Into the 67th minute, Dwight McNeil nicks the ball off Burnley, and whilst dribbling through on goal, Dara O'Shea, the Claret's last man back, clatters Dwight and is given a red card, meaning Burnley are down to 10 men and a goal down.

There were nervy moments, poor periods of possession, and arguably wrong referring decisions, but after the 6 minutes of additional time, Everton's first Premier League win of 2024 was confirmed!

Bottom of the Premier League Table: ( As of 6 April @ 7pm)

14. Crystal Palace - 30

15. Everton - 29

16. Brentford - 29

17. Forest - 25

18. Luton - 25

19. Burnley - 19

20. Sheffield United - 15

It is tight at the bottom, with Crystal Palace being sucked into the relegation battle following the Toffees' win, Luton's victory against Bournemouth, and Brentford's 3-3 draw against 4th-placed Aston Villa.

Today's 12:30 + 3pm Results:

Crystal Palace 2-4 Man City

Aston Villa 3-3 Brentford

Everton 1-0 Burnley

Fulham 0-1 Newcastle

It is in Everton's hands to stay up, with an easier run of fixtures in place for the Blues. Facing teams around us in the league and majority of them being at home!
