A Goalless Game Means Points Are Shared

Jordan Pickford was the key in the draw away from home against West Ham today. A stunning save towards the conclusion of the fixture, alongside many more throughout the duration of the match, emerged a deserved man of the match award and meant the points were shared.

Everton had a huge early chance when the Blues broke on the counterattack. When Abdoulaye Doucoue picked up the ball and was one versus one against Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, behind him was Crysencio Summerville, who caught up and managed to make a massive block to deny Everton the possibility of scoring.

The Toffees should’ve been ahead by the break but weren’t able to exploit any chances. Only two minutes before the halftime whistle was called, West Ham sparked a couple of big opportunities through Englishmen Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.

As the second half came about, West Ham had improved so much that Jordan Pickford had to come to the rescue. Attempts from Summerville and Danny Ings are arguably the most notable and surprising out of the many chances the Englishman faced.

Danny Ings, in the 3rd minute of additional time, was through and hit the ball with extreme power, causing Pickford to spark an unbelievable save to keep the game level.

The full-time whistle was blown, meaning that the points were shared. Not the most impressive performances from both sides, but there are some positives to take but a lot of negatives that do need addressing.

The draw may take the pressure off West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, as a poor performance may have been the final straw. However, Sean Dyche will still be under pressure, as some will argue there has been a common pattern of poor displays.

In his post-match interview, Sean Dyche expressed the need for “a bit of devil” in attack as number nine Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only managed to achieve two goals this Premier League season. However, Armando Broja is close to making a full return to first-team football, as the Albanian is currently training back on the grass, which may take the workload off the Englishman, hopefully providing Everton with the goals needed to stay another season in the top flight.
