It only took the Toffees 10 minutes to get the first. A free kick on the edge of the box, standing over it were Dwight McNeil and Ashley Young, who took it. A curl around the wall perfectly placed into the bottom left corner of the Park End net. Jose Sa was close to making the save but wasn’t able to fully stretch to deny Everton from going ahead.

6 minutes later, Everton received another set piece, this time more towards the byline on the main stand. A cross in by Dwight McNeil landed onto James Tarkowski’s head, who headed it home! However, a lengthy VAR decision confirmed that within the rumble in the penalty area, Orel Mangala was standing in an offside position and was obstructing an opposition player. Though Tarkowski had three men marking him, and none got near him anyway, the goal was denied.
The 33rd minute was the next big moment in the game. A volley by Ukrainian left back Mykolenko was fluffed, and it came back to Orel Mangala, who smashed it from the edge of the box, taking a deflection that was enough to fool the goalkeeper as it rustled into the goal for the Belgian’s first goal for the Blues and making it 2-0 to the Toffees at the halftime break!
Orel Mangala Everton Stats:
Appearances: 12
Goals: 1
Assists: 0
The second half began, and Everton was relentless against a poorly performing Wolves. A first own goal from Craig Dawson in front of the Gwlayds’ Street in the 49th minute is arguably the best way to begin after the break, and that is what occurred!
Wolves overall body language now appeared dull with a lack of hope. The last time Everton had scored a goal before this fixture was in October, so it would have definitely come as a shock for many of the Wolverhampton Wanderers players on the pitch that the Blues managed to score 3!
However, it wasn’t only 3; it was 4! A second Craig Dawson own goal in the 72nd minute was the breaking point for many of the Wolves players and fans who travelled down on a freezing Wednesday night. So much so, come the final whistle, and the squad went over to clap the supporters, tension was high as signals of anger and a loud racket of fury emerged from the corner of the Bullens Stand.
This situation was mentioned in Wolves’ manager Gary O’Neil’s post-match interview. He responded exclaiming that he will always be grateful for the support he has received during his time as manager, as well as it being understandable why they are collectively conducting themselves the way they did.

Matches: 60
Won: 20
Drawn: 11
Lost: 29
We also saw the first glimpse of new striker Armando Broja, coming on as a substitute replacing Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 83rd minute, and he performed some impressive moves. So much so that the Albanian probably should have gotten an assist, beating the line of defence before laying it off on the edge of the box to Jack Harrison, who unfortunately skied the ball above the crossbar!
