Everton were favourites going into the 3pm kickoff, and the Toffees’ fast start backed up the feeling that they could take all three points on the road. It took just seven minutes for the opener in what turned out to be a five goal thriller. Ukrainian full back Vitalii Mykolenko picked up the ball outside the box and floated a cross into the path of Jack Grealish, who was charging forward. The England international, who grabbed two assists in the recent 2–0 win at Brighton, the first Premier League game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, played the ball across goal for Beto to attack. With little work to do, the Portuguese striker headed it past José Sá, giving the Blues the early advantage. It was an important goal for Beto as well, with competition for his place heating up thanks to new signing Thierno Barry’s strong start at the club. A brief VAR check confirmed Grealish was onside from Mykolenko’s cross.

Everton then controlled the tempo for the next 15 minutes, looking calm and composed in and out of possession. But against the run of play, Wolves equalised through Hwang Hee Chan. Marshall Munetsi picked up the ball on the right and clipped a cross field pass to the South Korean, who darted between the centre backs as Jordan Pickford rushed out too late. Hwang calmly slotted it home to level the match, giving Vítor Pereira’s side some much needed hope after a rough start to their Premier League campaign, which had seen them lose 4–0 to Manchester City on opening weekend and 1–0 to Bournemouth, where Toti Gomes was also sent off.

The Toffees responded well to the setback. Wolves midfielder André was dispossessed in the final third, and the ball broke to Grealish, who laid it off to Beto. Instead of turning himself, the striker let it run to the edge of the box for Kiernan Dewsbury Hall. A quick one two with Grealish followed, capped by a brilliant chipped return ball. Dewsbury Hall played it across goal, where Beto shaped to shoot but let it run, completely fooling the defender. That opened the way for Iliman Ndiaye, who tapped home to restore Everton’s lead before half time.

Coming out after the break, Moyes’ side pressed Wolves higher up the pitch. A loose pass fell to Idrissa Gana Gueye, who knocked it on to Grealish. The winger turned into space and slipped the ball to Dewsbury Hall, almost identical to the first half move. This time though, the midfielder took it on himself, smashing a volley in off the crossbar to make it 3–1. A stunning strike for his first Everton goal.

Everton looked to be in cruise control, but they handed Wolves a lifeline late on. In the 79th minute, David Møller Wolfe, just four minutes after coming on, hit a cross field ball similar to Munetsi’s in the first half. It picked out Rodrigo Gomes, a defender making a forward run, who got between the centre backs and tucked it away to make it 3–2. Wolves pushed hard in the closing stages, with one big chance inside the box that really should have been converted, but Everton held on through six minutes of added time to seal a valuable three points on the road.
